Saint Sulpice (i.e., Saint Sulpitius)

Basilica of Notre-Dame de Montréal

The French inscription may be translated "Saint Sulpitius, the good bishop of Bourges." His episcopal status is symbolized by the mitre and crozier, and the round loaf in his hand refers to his eagerness to minister to the poor.

The parish served by the basilica was founded in 1657 by priests from France who were members of the Society of Priests of Saint Sulpice.
